  1. Job Purpose

    Are you a young and dynamic professional looking to work in the collective corporate sustainability space? You are agile, dependable, highly organized and have outstanding presentation, facilitation, and business writing skills. You are aware of and have some working knowledge of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) imperatives for business.     The Global Compact Network South Africa (GCNSA) is an independent Network of the UN Global Compact, working with companies in South Africa to scale impact on the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact and UN SDGs in close alignment with South Africa’s National Development Plan. The Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact are in the areas of Human Rights, Labour, Environmental Protection and Anti-Corruption. To that end, the organisation will undertake various programmes and requires a Programme Coordinator to coordinate and assist with their successful delivery.

    The UN Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. The organisation calls on companies to align strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption, and take actions that advance societal goals. The UN Global Compact works to accelerate and scale the global collective business impact, by upholding the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact and delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals.

    The role involves coordination of programme activities & events, facilitation of selected Accelerators, monitoring of progress and reporting on activities.

  1. Key Responsibilities Areas
    • Programme Coordination & Implementation: Coordinate, plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate multiple GCNSA programmes/initiatives and the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact ensuring strategic alignment with United Nations Global Compact Office & UN messaging on thematic issues, Global Compact activities, and engagement opportunities as relevant for South Africa’s context. Current programme areas include Young SDG Innovators, Target Gender Equality; SDG Ambition Accelerator; Climate Ambition Accelerator, and Business & Human Rights Programmes.
    • Reporting: Compile, analyse, summarise, and present information on specific programme and share lessons learned
    • Presenting and facilitating: Present and facilitate discussions at events.
    • Convening and Catalysing: Coordinate the convening of events, workshops, compact dialogues as directed to catalyse impact. Also mobilise effective participation of companies in these events
    • Partnership and Strategic alignment: Assist in building and maintaining partnerships and strategic alignment with stakeholders.
    • Fundraising: Assist the Programme Manager in obtaining funding and/or sponsorship for programmes
    • Administration, Coordination and Logistics: Set up, coordinate administration tasks and logistics as directed.
    • Document Management and Control: Ensuring efficient control and management of document and record.
    • Media and comms: Assist in drafting, designing programme comms in accordance with GCNSA communication plan.
    • Ad hoc tasks: Perform any other work-related duties as assigned and directed.

    • Business Writing Skills: Ability to write professionally, clearly, concisely, and effectively.
    • Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

  1. Qualifications and Experience
    • An advanced degree in Sustainable Development; Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related qualification, Economics; Management, or other related degree.
    • At least 5 years of experience in corporate sustainability, any of the ESG areas, international development or related.
    • Understanding of the corporate sector in South Africa.
    • Proven project coordinating skills with experience coordinating multiple projects.
    • Demonstrated success in project planning, coordination, financial management, program monitoring, report writing.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking, facilitation, and presentation skills.
    • Experience in data processing (Microsoft Word), spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel), E-mail, and Internet browser software.
    • Strong English skills (spoken and written).
