South Africa’s 2024 Voluntary National Review (VNR), released by the United Nations Global Compact Network South Africa, highlights the private sector’s vital role in advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The report shows that while challenges remain, SDG alignment offers major opportunities, including access to an estimated $12 trillion in global market potential. Companies that integrate sustainability into core strategy—supported by strong leadership, reliable data, and effective partnerships—are better positioned for long-term growth and impact. The VNR also emphasises the importance of public-private collaboration, recognising contributions from partners such as Absa, which drives sustainable finance, manages climate risk, and champions sustainability through its commitments and partnerships. Ultimately, the report calls on businesses to accelerate action toward the 2030 goals by embracing sustainability as both a responsibility and a pathway to shared value.
